Nowadays, more and more people are starting to vape and it is becoming more and more popular from a sub-culture. And the rapid development of vaping and its popularity among people is strongly connected to people’s awareness to achieve a healthier life and the innovations and conveniences that vape manufacturers bring.
If you are new to vaping, there must be a ton of confusing jargon and terms for you to understand. Fear not, Rome was not built in a day. Today we are going explain the vape coils - in a brief and simple way for you to easily understand what are they, what types are there, and how to use them.
What are vape coils?
Vape coil is playing one and only one character in the vape device - it takes power from the vape battery and turns it into heat, and then the e-liquid is heated and turned into vapour. To be more specific, there is a heat conductor(wire) and an e-liquid absorber(wick) in a coil. The wire conducts heat, while the wick absorbs the e-liquid in the vape tank. Consequently, it is easy to understand the working theory of a coil - the wick absorbs the e-liquid and the wire heats the e-liquid and turns it into vapour.
Vape coils are placed in atomisers, including tanks, pods, and RBAs. They come in a variety of resistances, builds and materials which provide vapers with different styles of vaping.
What are the types of vape coils?
Generally speaking, we tend to classify vape coils into 3 categories according to their different usages, which are MTL vape coils, DTL vape coils, and Rebuildable vape coils. The 3 types of vape coils have different features and performances, here is a simple chart for you to understand:

MTL vape coils
MTL vape coils usually have smaller wicking holes as the picture shows, they are often above 1.0ohm and used in lower output which means MTL vape coils would consume less e-liquid and produce less vapour. However, the good news is that MTL vape coils can create really good tastes for nic salt e-liquids. MTL vape coils not only consume less e-liquid but also bring much more nicotine satisfaction. Consequently, MTL vape coils are popular among the ex-smokers who have strong needs in nicotine satisfaction. Most open-system pod vape kits include the MTL coils, so you can go for a pod vape kit if you want to vape economically and discreetly.
DTL vape coils
Merely from this picture, we can find the evident difference between the DTL vape coils and the MTL vape coils - DTL vape coils are lower than 1.0 ohm and have more wicking holes so that the e-liquid can quickly wick the coil, then evaporated into a big amount of vapour by the heat. Therefore, DTL vape coils require higher wattage and comsume more e-liquids compared to the MTL vape coils. The pros of DTL vape coils are that you can enjoy a warm vapour going through your throat and lungs, a big and cloudy vapour exhaled from your mouth, and more layered flavours. And DTL vape coils often appear in pod mod vape kits or mod vape kits - since they require higher wattage and consume more e-liquids, using DTL vape coils may not be a good choice for most ex-smokers who just want to get their nicotine fixed. However, if you are a cloudy vapour chaser and enjoy warm vapour passing through your throat and lungs, DTL vape coils and powerful DTL vape kits are suitable for you.
Rebuildable vape coils
There are a variety of rebuildable vape coils including made-by-self coils and ready-built coils. Rebuildable vape coils reqiure a strong understanding to ohm laws and operational ability to customize the wires and cottons. Nowadays, only a small group of advanced vapers can make their own rebuildable vape coils. The pros of rebuildable vape coils are: it costs less; you can DIY your own vape coil in its material, shape, and resistance. And rebuildable vape coils are created for being used with rebuildable atomisers, and they are mounted onto the build deck of a rebuildable atomiser, there is also a hand-made cotton wick on the coil to soak up the e-liquid. What’s more, rebuildable vape coils can deliver more vapours and more flavours than DTL vape coils, so rebuildable vape coils require higher wattage and consume more e-liquids. Please note, for safety, only advanced vapers who know the Ohm Laws and can safely build the RBAs are recommended to use the rebuildable vape coils.
How to choose e-liquid for different vape coils?
For MTL vape coils, nic salt e-liquid and 50/50 e-liquid are recommended to use since a less VG e-liquid does not require high wattage to vapourize, and the nicotine strength can be higher because there is only a small amount of e-liquid being vaporized, and the salt nicotine can be absorbed fast by your body.
For DTL vape coils and rebuildable vape coils, high VG e-liquid and shortfill are recommended. Since these two types of coils need higher wattage, they would consume more e-liquids, and more e-liquids would produce more clouds. Generally, 70VG/30PG or higher VG e-liquid can produce a considerable amount of cloudy vapour. However, nicotine strength is recommended to use at a low level since these coils would consume more e-liquids, so there will be more nicotine vaporized by the coil and absorbed by your body.
Last but not least
The coil is an indispensable part of a vape kit, sometimes it needs to be maintained, cleaned, and replaced. Taking good care of coils can make sure your vaping experience enjoyable and consistent. It is easy to know when is necessary to clean or replace your coil - when you feel a burnt taste or it is tasteless, it is time to open your atomizer and check if there is too much gunk on the coil, then you can choose to clean it or replace it according to the coil status.
