Strict anti-smoking legislation has come into force banning the sale of menthol and flavored tobacco cigarettes in UK stores on May 20, 2020. The new smoking laws have been introduced to stop youth from smoking and reduce the number of smokers. As young people are more likely to mistakenly believe that flavored and mentholated cigarettes are less harmful, removing menthol cigarettes from the market will effectively avoid young people from starting smoking. The UK government also pledges to be smoke-free in England by 2030 to tackle the causes of preventable ill-health.

The new laws take menthol cigarettes, menthol filters and papers, menthol rollies, skinny cigarettes off the shelves in the UK and are part of the four-year phase-out period that falls under the EU Tobacco Product Directive laws on May 20, 2016. Why is the Ban Being Introduced?
The ban comes as part of a persistent effort to prevent young people from smoking and reduce the number of people taking up the smoking habit. The change will certainly lead to fewer young people smoking. Cancer Research finds that two-thirds of smokers start smoking with tobacco before the age of 18 causing approximately 100,000 deaths every year in the UK. An ASH spokesperson said that menthol cigarettes relax the airways and the flavor weakens the harshness of the smoke, so young people are easier to smoke. In reality, menthol is an additive that increases the addiction to the nicotine.
Menthol cigarettes are just as harmful as normal cigarettes and most adult smokers become addicted to smoking in their youth. So the ban will help the UK Government reach its ambition for a smoke-free England by 2030.
